Managing The Time When Attempting Questions &
Responses In The Listening Section Of The TOEIC
The TOEIC Test which is the Test of English for
International Communication or more commonly known
as TOEIC is administered as a measure to evaluate
the proficiency of a person in all the four aspects
of English language. In the listening test, time
management is very important as you need to answer
100 questions within 45mins. Out of these 100
questions, you have 30 Questions & Responses test.
The challenge lies in the fact that there is no
repetition of the questions or the options nor is it
available in print. So you need to understand and
grasp the content and the context the first and only
time you hear it.
Avoid Reading Instructions:
If you have practiced a lot then you can do away
with listening to the instructions as you would be
aware of them already. This is one way of saving
time in the actual test.
Understand the form of the question
By doing so you can differentiate between the WH
questions and the YES/ No Questions this will help
in narrowing down to the right answer.
Identify The Tense In The Question
This is important as you can easily find the answer
in the same tense and if there are two answers in
the same tense then your options are narrowed down
to two and between them look out for other factors
like place or person, and the similar sound words
Draw a relation between words in the question and
those in the responses
If you have the word “train” in the question, and
you have it in the noun form in option A and in the
verb form in option B, then try to understand the
grammatical function of the word in the question.
This will help you to understand the right option.
Ex. Does your child have a toy train to play with?
is leaving the station
(wrong answer even
though the word train is a noun – it does not answer
the question about the child having the toy)
children in school.
(Wrong answer – as the
word train is used as a verb / completely unrelated
No, he doesn’t (is the
right answer as it answers the question with a yes
Recap all that you have practiced during your
preparation for the test and apply them in the test
whenever you can.
By keeping these facts in mind, you are sure to
score high in the Questions & Responses part of the
TOEIC Listening Test.
