standardized test that measures the candidate’s
competency in the English language. The test is
usually taken in the four aspects of language which

are two formats in which the TOEFL Tests are
conducted and they are the TOEFL IBT or the internet
based test and the TOEFL PBT or the paper based test
which is conducted only in places where the TOEFL
IBT is not available. One significant difference in

Test has been included in the TOEFL IBT which has

The Structure of the TOEFL Tests
The structure of the TOEFL Tests is relatively
simple to understand especially when writing the
exam. All the four modules of language learning are
integrated into the test. The four modules include
Reading, Writing Speaking and Listening. The
complete duration of the test is four hours and each
module has a time allocation as follows:
Listening: The listening test is of 60-90
minutes duration and is made up of 34-51 questions.
There are 3 types of questions are organized in 3

2. Long conversations and Class discussions
3. Short talks and lectures
TOEFL Reading: The Reading test is of 60
minutes duration and is made up of 36-70 questions
3-6 Reading Passages of varying lengths with 6-10
questions after each passage. The total number of
questions varies from 44-55 questions.
TOEFL Writing: The Writing test is of 50
minutes duration and is made up of 2 tasks. Three
types of topics are generally asked in the tests:
1. Argumentative essays: You must argue both sides
of an issue and take a stand on one.
2. Persuasive Essays: You either agree or disagree
with a statement and the support you opinion.
3. Extension: Several statements are provided to
support an argument. You need to choose one similar
example of your own and say why you choose it.
TOEFL Speaking: The Speaking test is of 20
minutes duration and is made up of 6 tasks. There
are basically three types of speaking tests.
Questions 1&2 – are general questions
Questions 3&4 are short texts which you have to read
and answer the questions vocally.
Questions 5&6 are conversations which you will hear
and on which you will be asked questions.
