How to Study the TOEFL Vocabulary?
One of the most important criteria for success in
the TOEFL Test is having a high level of vocabulary.
A high level of vocabulary can guarantee a high
score in all the four modules of the test namely,
Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. If you are
taking the test to help you gain admission into the
top universities in UK, USA, Canada, having a high
vocabulary will help you in the Writing and speaking
module which directly affects your chances of
admission. So understandably you need to have a high
level of vocabulary and also a good volume of it.
There are many ways you can study vocabulary for
the TOEFL Test and some of them include:
1. Read plenty of different kinds of books,
journals, newspapers, newsletter, and anything you
can lay your hands on. This will help you to take
the reading test smoothly and also make the words
look familiar, especially words that are rarely used
in your day to day language.
2. Listen to plenty of spoken English because this
would help you in understanding the correct
pronunciation and also the right intonation.
3. Get a couple of Grammar books or register on the
different English Grammar sites to practice grammar
so that your writing does not suffer. In the TOEFL
Tests, Grammar is checked usually in all the four
modules and there is no special TOEFL Grammar test.
So you need to ensure that your grammar skills are
of a higher level so that you don’t lose marks in
the four tests. Having a deep understanding of
grammar will help you increase your vocabulary. For
example if you were to use the word “apply” which is
a verb, you should know that the known form is
“application”. Check out the sentence below:
I need to submit an application for a new job
opening tomorrow (best avoided)
I need to apply for a new job opening tomorrow.
Only with proper knowledge of Grammar can you
enhance your vocabulary skills.
4. Set a goal to learn new words: Everyday ensure
that at the end of the day you have at least picked
up 5 words which are new to you and you are not
familiar with. At the end of the day ensure that you
know how to use them in sentences, in your speaking
and in the correct tense form.
By following these few steps, you are assured of a
good vocabulary level to help you crack the TOEFL
