Sample Essay 2: Write a 400-word
TOEFL sample essay on the following. “Nowadays, with the invention of the microwave
and with the popularity of fast food restaurants,
food has become easier to prepare than ever. Do you
think microwave ovens and fast food restaurants are
beneficial to society? Use specific reasons and
examples to support your answer.
habit of people is one aspect in life that keeps on
changing according to the change in circumstances.
There was a time when people hunted for food and
that was when they did not know how to cook.
Gradually man learned how to cook, to cultivate and
grow food, and later on even to preserve food for
future use. And today the food industry has become
so advanced that it is now processed in such a way
that you don’t even need to cook it. Some foods just
need to be heated and it is ready for consumption.
Today a number of appliances have entered the
kitchen and saves time for the woman who is now a
breadwinner also. The life of the woman today has
changed in such a way that she too shares the
financial burden of the family and contributes to it
to provide a better and more comfortable living for
the family. Therefore, the number of appliances in
the kitchen has definitely helped the woman who now
does not need to spend too much time in the kitchen.
But the question of whether cooking in all the
appliances and fast food culture is beneficial to
society or not is debatable. I believe that it is
not beneficial as it might help you save time for
the time being but in the long run it can have
health hazards. Moreover, you eat what others make
and not what you would like to taste. The fast food
joints for example, notch up a dish in a jiffy but
how much of nutritional value does it have. The
freshness of the vegetables and fruits is lost as it
is difficult to maintain it when in bulk.
Another factor besides the health issues is that
when eating pre-cooked or pre-processed food, one is
not really hungry enough to eat healthy food from
home. So after a hard days work and with no real
hunger to trigger your taste buds, you end up not
cooking for the night too and make do with some
fruits or a health drink. This might be filling and
refreshing for going to sleep but the sleep can be
disturbed due to hunger pangs later at night. This
causes loss of sleep, disturbed sleep and a feeling
of fatigue and tiredness early in the morning when
you should be looking fresh.
So I think fast foods and pre-cooked or
pre-processed food should be kept for occasions or
weekends when you can take some extra rest. It is
better to wake up an hour earlier and get done with
the cooking for the family for the entire day. This
helps in not only keeping your family healthy but
also ensures that you save on your food bills every
